Origins Of Chinese Food Culture

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

This is the first time ever in my life to read about Chinese culture. Looks interesting from its illustrations. It tells about cooking culture, characteristics of Chinese cuisine, the art and etiquette of dining, diet and healthy living, local snacks, New Year dishes and chopsticks.

It goes from origin of cooking, to evolutions of cooking and eating practices, to all sort of Chinese food like mantou, bean curd, seasonings, tonics, century egg, noodles, New Year cakes and the list goes on and on.

This book is illustrated by Fu Chunjiang, translated by Qiu Yao Hong, published by Asiapac Singapore.

Perhaps I should try the other books in the series, mainly Origins of Chinese People & Customs, Origins of Chinese Music & Art, Origins of Chinese Folk Arts, Origins Chinese Martial Arts, Origins of Chinese Cuisine and Origins of Chinese Festivals.

France Team’s Fireworks

Sunday, August 14th, 2005

Guess what, he really forgotten about the fireworks. Know him too well to be surprised by the "forgetfulness", my "log-dear". I think he remembered the fireworks is on 14th, but he didn’t remember yesterday was 14th.

But, I guess you must be surprised, that we managed to watch the fireworks anyway. He brought me to the side of Esplanade, and I was so pissed off by this couple sitting in front of us. The bf wanted to light a cigarette and the gf lit for him. And to my surprise, she smokes too. Sigh ya… the smoke blew right to my face. Dammit.. There were so many people there, but there they were, smoking and blowing to crowds’ direction. So inconsiderate, selfish giant monsters.

The fireworks were enjoyable. The climax was somewhere at the end, just a short few minutes at the end, but enough to get a big round of applause from the crowds. This year, we didn’t stand in the middle of the road like last year. My "friends" are all over there. So, I didn’t even cheer. (Those around me were aunt, unc, and babies, who watched in silence).

Nevertheless, I am thankful he brought me there. :-)

(Silently, I wished Jenny is still here in Sg, then we can share the precious moment together.)

Fireworks…..

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

It’s the time of the year again, for fireworks and fireworks. Hmmm… there are a few sessions this year round, 6th, 8th, 9th, and 14th Aug.

Well well, I was kinda disappointed when we missed the 6th Aug fireworks, but then, we catched a glimpse of them on the ferry. Wow… it was amazing, I was happy but not satisfied. I was a bit disappointed of the Portugal team, the fireworks looked repetitive, no climax, and no suspense. He was holding my hands tight, enjoying the view… but something was missing. The crowds’ cheering, girls’ screaming and of coz a good view, though the companion is soooooo right. :-p

He promised to bring me to the France team’s on 14th Aug. Hope he do what he promised. Coz we’ll have to wait for another year before the next fireworks "season"…..

Not quite sure how long this website will be here, but to those interested (and in Sg), check this out… http://www.singaporefireworksfestival.com.sg/schedule.htm

Three In A Bed

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

"Three In A Bed" by Carmen Reid may sound like an adulterous affair. Well, getting close, but not quite.

Bella Browning is attractive, successful and ambitious. She works hard, plays hard and adores her journalist hubby Don (even though she doesn’t always behave as well as she should). But deep down, she knows there’s something missing… a baby. But hubby is terrified by the prospect.

Bella got pregnant, convincing hubby that it’s due to "accident". A top Management Consultant running around multi-million pound corporations.. she can handle, can’t she handle this?

In between bouts of morning sickness, raging hormones and a few indiscretions with gorgeous Chris from the office, she quickly discovers how very hard it is to be the perfect, working modern mother with the sex appeal of a Grecian goddess.

The book with a few scenes to turn you on.. disagreements that turn you off.. and obviously, sickness and pain that scared me off. Bella was in labour pain for almost 21 hours, giving birth to a cute baby boy, and trust me, the story doesn’t just end there.

Crying baby, without knowing the cause, midnight breastfeeding and shopping with baby screaming and crying on top of his lung, house that look like a mess and mountains of nappies, used and not used around, not trusting nanny to take care of her baby, her baby needs to hang on her breast every now and then. She can’t be apart from baby for a second, and so does the baby. Not just that, she quit her job out of irrationality and how are they going to pay the mortage? (Don is earning way lesser than she does).

I must admit, I am a bit phobic of the whole situation. Feel the pain, the irritation, the frustration, anger, disappointment. In addition if you have a not-so-understanding hubby. Sigh, how is she going to survive?

Well, she has got a good brain despite a pair of good boobs though. She knows pretty well the company can’t cope without her and she made a bargain that her boss, Susan would not resist. Online consultancy. She found a dependable nanny through good friend Red and work from home when baby is with Nanny. She was made the partner in the company, with a jump in pay and gets to be with baby all she wants.

By the way, the baby’s name is… Markie.
