Just hope it is not too late….

It’s gonna be some time before I can write books review on the blog. I am forbidden from reading novels until examination’s over. My my, that will be like 22days from now. Gosh, how am I going to survive these 1,900,800 seconds?

Work have been hectic recently, extremely hectic. Worked so hard that it is so difficult to fall asleep under such circumstances. Worst case, when colleagues asked if I am not feeling well, I look pale, I lose weight. But then, I still feel the same, just a bit more tired.

Jenny, as usual, asked me to take things easy, take some time off and think of what I really want in life. To her, it’s as simple as ABC. She’s married, and put hubby and family first. While for me, work, work and work. She quoted Bernard’s words, but in a slightly different version, telling me, there will be no one lying on his deathbed regretted for not having spent enough time in office. Bernard’s version would be : no one lying on his deathbed regretted for not attending a training course than missing good friend’s wedding. :-)

Perhaps it is really time to move on. Now sort of understand what Bernard meant by the working culture. Just hope it is not too late….

Too Little, Too Late - Colette Caddle

Stephanie West loves her job as manager of a successful restaurant, but is treated appallingly by the self-obsessed owner and head chef. So when an opportunity arises to buy him out, she jumps at it.

Steph’s haunted by a tragedy in the past. Her best friend, Ruth was pregnant when she committed suicide. Ruth asked Steph to go over but Steph chose to go to a date with Seán then. They were 19. Ruth died and Steph couldn’t help feeling guilty. If she went to talk to Ruth, perhaps Ruth would not have died. Seán and her separated soon after, you should know why.

That was more than 15 years ago; now, Seán is back to town, about to divorce his wife Karen, with a son Billy, 10 years old. Old couple reconciled. Seán and Steph made it even better this time. But something is holding Steph back. She can’t bring herself to say yes to Seán’s proposal.

Then Seán lands a huge contract with a software company in Arizona and wants her to go with him. Steph is just too "selfish" to follow, chose to handle her restaurant instead. Pity huh? Not quite… I have not told you that she is pregnant but chose to abort it. Seán got very angry and went to Arizona for good (at least for quite some time). He didn’t know of course, that Steph, at the very last minute, changed her mind.

When you thought everything went well, Steph’s restaurant went on fire. The stairs she used gave way, and there goes the few weeks baby. She was tormented but the incident got Seán back to her side.

One fine day, Ruth’s mommy, Joan managed to track Steph down and asked Steph to pay her a visit. After a few sessions of crying all the hearts out, Steph feels better. Joan’s right, Ruth had planned everything. Even if Steph managed to meet her the other day, Ruth would have done it some other day.

With that burden off her shoulder, Steph finally realise she loves Seán very much, to the extent proposing to him. And of course, Seán said yes. :-)

I am surprised this book could make me smile and cry, just like Sophie Kinsella. This is another good author. Cheers…

The Marriage

This book by Dallas Schulze is easy to read. It took me the least time as compared to the other books despite the busy work schedule. Oh my.. work is getting crazy again.

Ryan Lassiter is carrying a lot of emotional baggage. His jet set parents sent him as a young boy to live on a large ranch in Wyoming with his grandfather. Maggie Drummond also has a problem life. Her mother, Lydia is an aimless dreamer who lives out her life vicariously through TV. Her sister, Noreen is an amoral slut who sees men as sources of money and sex. Noreen, who is tall, skinny and blonde spends a lot of time taunting short, plump Maggie for her lack of sex appeal. Maggie is the only competent member of the family and is a warm, kind and loving woman.

Ryan and Maggie meet when he picks her up after her car develops transmission problems. Ryan has come back to the ranch after breaking his arm on the rodeo circuit. His grandfather is pushing him to marry again and trying to fix him up with Shelly, an old high school classmate. Maggie is working as a waitress and likes her job. If it were not for her horrible mother and sister, she would be perfectly happy and content. Gradually, Maggie and Ryan develop a friendship.

When Ryan’s grandfather’s matchmaking gets to be too much for him, he impulsively asks Maggie to marry him. Ryan and Maggie enter their marriage of convenience, him to spite his grandfather and her to stay in the town she loves. You should have seen how Lydia reacted to the news : Ryan marries her daughter Maggie, the plain Jane, not Noreen.. :-p

Its really funny the way Ryan and Maggie spend their first 2.5 weeks and a few hours of marriage life sleeping separately, not even kissing each other. They treat each other politely, as in, really politely. Ryan feels the pain when he needs to take cold shower every night, thinking of what Maggie wearing to bed… :-p

Well well, all well ends well… it’s a good relaxing book.
